Step 1: Prepare the Bread Pudding
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Combine bread and pecans: In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes and chopped pecans. Transfer to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Mix the custard: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Pour over bread: Pour the custard mixture over the bread and pecans, gently pressing the bread down to ensure it soaks up the liquid.
- Let it sit: Allow the mixture to sit for about 15-30 minutes so the bread can absorb the custard.
Step 2: Bake the Bread Pudding
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
Step 3: Prepare the Caramel Sauce (Optional)
- Make the sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar, heavy cream, and butter. Stir until the mixture comes to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly until thickened.
- Add vanilla: Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Step 4: Serve
- Cool slightly: Allow the bread pudding to cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Drizzle with caramel: Serve warm, drizzled with caramel sauce if desired, and enjoy!
